Google Introduces Fact Check Label in News Articles

Google is the leading search engine not because of the highest number of users but also due to the amazing features it offers to the users. It keeps launching new features every now and then to ensure that the users get the best browsing experience.

The new addition to the list of features is ‘fact-check’ option in news articles. The label will appear alongside other labels in news search results such as opinion, local source etc.

In the large news articles with a lot of facts and figures readers frequently become confused with the authenticity of the sources. Looking at this, Google has now introduced this new fact check feature for news stories.

While talking about the launch, Google Head of News, Richard Gingras said, “We are happy to see the growth of the fact-checking community. Google News determines whether an article might contain fact checks in part by looking for the schema.org Claim Review markup. We also look for sites that follow the commonly accepted criteria for fact checks.”

The new feature in News Articles will allow the readers to click on the links to check the authenticity of the facts by checking evaluation reports made by fact-check organizations.

How Does Fact-Check Feature Work?

Google News determines the use of facts checks in an article by using an algorithm. The algorithm evaluates the claims by checking the websites that follow the normally accepted fact-check criteria.

As marked in the image above, fact check labels are visible in the expanded story box in Google News. You can see the results both on IOS and Android apps as well.

Over the last few years, fact checking has gained a lot of importance. Many leading organizations like International Fact-Checking Network perform rigorous fact checks through above 100 active websites.

Though the roll out is for the US and UK based users only, this is a great move from the largest search engine.
